I’ve been missing in action from blogland, but as you can tell from the photo, I was still working on art. This photo hails from a stop at a beautiful Virginia vineyard, just beautiful. Did I say it was beautiful? Beautiful.

This is my weekly journal quilt 26/52 2008, 6″ x 8″. This piece *WOW* I say it louder! * took me quite a while. It is a study for a larger work. I created this piece by cutting tiny strips of black and white fabrics and fusing them to black and white fabrics, a red batik or a teal hand dyed solid. I then sandwiched these tops with batting and backing fabric. I proceeded to stitch/quilt the pieces with straight stitches and zig zag stitches. At that time, I cut the quilted pieces into the squares and rectangles shapes you see. I finally zig zagged the pieces “back” together, fused another piece of fabric to the back for stability, and zig zagged the edges of the piece.

This is my weekly journal quilt 12/52 2008.  I created this design based on a cut paper black and white study I did last year.  I used recycled tie fabric for the background.  The other fabrics that create the lines are batiks and solid cottons.  I fused the linear forms to the background fabric and then stitched them in place with variegated and solid thread.

This is my Weekly Journal Quilt 11/52 2008. I was inspired by a gorgeous photo of a political celebration with women in gorgeous clothing in the colors shown here. The photo has been sitting in my sketchbook for many months. The photo also had a lot of diagonal movement, which is why I ultimately decided to use strips on the diagonal. I used variegated green thread on the strips. After I completed the strips, the piece needed some more interest, so I added a layer of tulle with flocked black polka dots. It mutes the colors just a bit and brings in contrast, which I love!

Whew! Life was busy this month. I’ll do a bit of catching up on posting weekly journal quits now!

This is my 10/52 2008 Weekly Journal Quilt. I created a thermofax screen with one of my stylized tree images on it, which I used to paint this blue tree on black fabric.  I then trimmed it up with shadows all around the tree and fused it to the black and white background fabric.  Instead of placing a fabric circle halo around the top of the quilt on this piece, I stitched a circle halo with blue variegated thread.  I enjoy how the gradation of dots on the Jane Sassaman fabric hints at leaves falling to the ground. More catching up to come!

This is my weekly journal quilt 6/52 2008. I fell in love with it on my “fun with paint” day. Every time I walked by it, I liked it more. I printed the green background first. Then, I went over it with the leaf stamp in dark green/black. I just stamped the leaves without a huge plan. Then I realized that my lack of plan in my overall leaf patterning left a random hole in the top right area. At that point, I decided to add the dots, which I think worked in great!

My weekly journal quilt I’m working on for this week (7/52) DOESN’T have the block print in the background. I know, crazy!
